What are some of the key aspects of a song or band that you gravitate towards? In other words, what is it about the music you listen to that you like?
For me many things come to mind, I enjoy the drumming of soilwork and their mix of clean/core vocals. Recently I have been into music with more guitar focus. Vocals are still very important. It's hard to pin down exactly what makes good vocals to me, but one part is when they are singing with some passion. Not just singing words off a page. If you know what I mean.

For me, a solid chorus goes a long way, but also like a solid tune for the verses. I like when the vocals mesh well with the flow of the song. Lately I find that a mix of core/clean and core/female vocals are good for this.
The song would need to either have a nice melody to it, a rocking beat, or nice chorus. I like songs with a more defined beat, rather than some death metal which is mainly the drummer hammering the bass and snare drums, with little melody in the song.
Im also picky about the type of core vocals that there are. I generally like if you can at least partially make out what is being said. Some bands you cant even make it out when you're reading the lyrics.
Im not completely all about the core anymore though, but still listen to a lot of it.
A couple songs Im listening to these days:
Female vocals, some core, enjoyable chorus.
Its got the core, the catchy chorus, good verses, its got it all.
No vocals, but I like its energy and rockin-ness.
